OVERVIEW

Botshelo Water is a Schedule 3B public entity established in terms of Section 84 of the Water Services Act, No. 108 of 1997, and its core function is to provide water services to its clients, mainly in form of bulk water, retail water services as well as operation and maintenance of water infrastructure.


Our service area comprises of two District Municipalities in the North West Province. The total area of service is 50 000 km2 , with a population of about 900 000 people.  We strive to improve the quality of life  by providing  water services to  municipalities, communities and industries in the Ngaka Modiri Molema (NMMDM) and Dr Ruth Segomotsi  District Municipalities.


Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality (NMMDM) (formerly Central District Municipality) is the second largest district in the North West province in South Africa both in population and size and comprise of 5 local municipalities. Its capital is Mahikeng, which is also the capital of the province.


Botshelo Water operates and maintains schemes in four of the five Local Municipalities of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality;


Mafikeng Local Municipality (NW 383)

Ramotshere Moiloa  Local Municipality (NW 385)

Ratlou Local Municipality (NW 381)

Ditsobotla Local Municipality (NW 384


Tswaing Local Municipality (NW 381) (Botshelo do not operate in this LM)


LEGISLATION AND MANDATES

Botshelo Water derives its mandate from Sections 29 and 30 of the Water Services Act, 108 of 1997 which entails primary and secondary activities respectively, provided to other water services institutions such as local and district municipalities. Botshelo Water’s primary activities include abstraction, purification and supply of bulk potable water to part of Ngaka Modiri District municipality. Secondary activities provided to both District Municipalities include operation, maintenance and retail services.


In addition to its mandate, Botshelo Water has a strategic developmental role that may require decisions that are not always optimal from a commercial perspective, but contribute to National Government’s broader objectives and the growth and development in South Africa and Africa.

Operations and Maintenance

Botshelo Water operates and maintains the TSWASA scheme, which supplies raw water from the Molatedi Dam to:

•Gaborone, Botswana

•Derdepoort Irrigation farmers


In addition, Botshelo Water is responsible for continuous infrastructure maintenance of pipelines, boreholes, windmills and pump stations in both the NMMDM and the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.
